This is a good book on health. The author, K.R.I. Jagadish who comes from a family of traditional herbalists, has completed with proficiency the advanced course in herbal medicine conducted by the South Australian School of Herbal Medicine. The beauty of this book lies in its successful effort to fuse the science and art of medicine with that of Yoga. The insatiable urge of the author to accumulate useful pieces of information from all possible sources and to assimilate them is amply evident here. In today's world, it has become necessary to present ancient Indian concepts in modern terminology so that everyone can understand them. This, however, cannot be achieved in one day. It is an arduous task, which may perhaps require several generations. It is heartening to note that Jgadish is treading this path. In the Western world, there is a tendency to assume that Yoga is merely the practice and perfection of Yogic postures (Asanas). This book has successfully presented various Yogic exercises with special reference to their therapeutic value. The reader need not wonder whether the author is acquainted with the true meaning and purpose of Yoga. It must be borne in mind that to use the great science of Yoga merely for its therapeutic value is like using a good milking cow just for its dung. The great sciences of Yoga and Ayurveda have many secret techniques. They, however, will be handed down by the accomplished gurus only if they feel that the disciples will use them for the welfare of mankind, which means not only providing for good health but also aiding spiritual practice.
