Women, who constitute half of the human population, have been denied their due share in politics not only in India but in the whole world. Thanks to efforts made by reformers and national and international organisations for changing the direction of the current and attracting the attention of all concerned to enable women community to share the power structure and get rid of domestic fetters. The recent seventy-third and seventy-fourth amendments to the Constitution of India are really courageous and praiseworthy efforts of the Government of India to provide opportunities to women of all castes and communities to take part in the political and developmental affairs at local level, which is the very foundation of the democratic structure of the country. The present book is an exploratory work undertaken with the assistance of the UGC. The participation of women at grass root level has been examined personally to asses their functioning. Though at village level their participation is not very encouraging but at certain higher levels they seem to be quite aware of their rights and duties. This is their first experience. If certain steps recommended in the books are taken by State Governments the quality of their participation and awareness will become meaningful in the next term. The contents of this book will be of great utility not only for researchers and students of law, political science, public administration, sociology, social work etc. But also to members of the legislature, executive as well as judiciary in understanding their problems so as to find out suitable solution for the uplift of women community.
