We feel extreme plesure to present to the Sanskrit scholars the reprint edition of Kalidasa’s unique creation, the Meghaduta with the commentary named Subudha written by Bharata mallika – a Bengali Vaidya in profession. This commentary was critically and laboriously edited by J.B. Chaudhuri, and first published in the Journal of Pracyavani, Vol. VII, 1950. In this endeavour, Dr. Chaudhuri was assisted by a band of renowned Sanskrit scholars of Bengal. The Merit of this toilsome edition rests on the learned editor’s collection and utilization of copious extracts from the unpublished commentaries on the Meghaduta, such as Tatparya-dipika of sanatana Goswami, Malati of Kalyanamalla, Muktavali of Ramanatha Tarkalamkara and the tika of Haragobinda Vacaspati. Of these the Tatparya-dipika was published by J.B. Chaudhuri in Pracyavani, Vol. X, pt. 2, and vol. XI, 1953-54. Mallinatha’s commentary (Sannjivani) on the Meghaduta is certainly the popular one, but when Subodha is brought to the light, it instantly proves itself to be the best of all the commentaries on the Meghduta. Relevant extracts have also been cited from the unpublished commentaries of Kaviratna, Krsnadasa Vidyavagisa, Sarasvatitirtha, Caritravardhana and sasvata on the Meghaduta.
