The present book is an attempt to bring clarity to the subject of guidance and counseling for those who wish to take it up professionally as a career. Keeping this in view, the present book has been written with three clear objectives, (i) to enable learners to understand the real meaning of guidance and counseling, (ii) to give the professionals all essential information and, (iii) to make the students, irrespective of their discipline, in developing insight into guidance and counselling. It is hoped that the humble effort made in the form of this book will assist in the accomplishment of the understanding of the various concepts, and methods applied in guidance and counselling. Regarding the organization, the book consists of twenty five chapters. This book is primarily intended to serve as a textbook for graduate, post-graduate students as well as for professionals working in the field of guidance and counselling. It is hoped that the book shall provide meaningful insights to all interested in guidance and counselling. This book is, in fact, a sharing of my experience of teaching the subject at graduate and postgraduate levels as well as my experience as a student counsellor. It has been observed that there is a complete vacuum regarding the relevant literature in India to help and guide the professionals in initiating and conducting the guidance and counseling programme at various levels. The present book it a humble effort to fill up this vacuum.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shah Alam

Dr. Shah Alam, is presently working as Lecturer in Psychology and Coordinator of P.G. Diploman in Guidance & Counselling, Centre for Distance Education at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. He started his career as a research assistant and served various institutions, Punjab Police Academy, National Council of Educational Research and Training etc. He obtained M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. Degree in Psychology from A.M.U. Aligarh. He also did Post Graduate Diploma in Educational and Vocational Guidance from NCERT, New Delhi. Before joining AMU, Aligarh he was working as Student Counsellor in R.I. E (N.C.E.R.T.), Ajmer. He has published more than 16 research papers and articles and attended more than 30 seminars/conferences/workshops. He has completed five major and minor research projects. He is also a research awardee by UGC.
