Spam has become a menace. It is severely undermining the potential of the Internet as an efficient and economic communication medium. A lot of manhours are wasted in dealing with spam. Also companies and Internet service providers have to spend a lot of money in putting in place infrastructure to prevent spam. Some popular ways in dealing with spam are either by blocking it or by using spam filters. The most popular filters are content based filters, such as fingerprint analysis, Lexicon analysis, artificial intelligence, statistical analysis and Heuristics. Many countries have put in place legislation to protect users against spam. Some of these laws make the spammer pay a certain sum of money for every spam mail sent. While some agree that stringent rules against spam are effective in dealing with spam, there are others who would like to pursue a different method to deal with spam. They say that understanding the basic mindset of a spammer, analyzing why he sends spam and examining his profit model could be a better way in dealing with spam. They also suggest a method of propaganda in dealing with spam. This book talks about the various ways in which spam can be minimized by going deep into the different types of spam filters. It goes through several approaches used to filter spam and calls for collaboration to fight spam and stresses that there is no single technique in fighting spam, rather a combination of anti-spamming techniques should be used to fight it.
