The Great Indian Bustard, Ardeotis nigriceps, is perhaps the rarest bustard in the world and one of the rarest birds of India. Despite protective measures, its numbers have gone down to less than 250 individuals, mainly because of illegal hunting and destruction of its grassland habitats.
