The Encyclopaedia has accounts of Christians who contributed to the welfare of persons and communities in India by their expertise in medicine, organizational skills and religious insight. The reader will also find matter relating to the events that shaped present-day Christian Churches and ecclesial communities and that highlight the different tasks which Christianity in India accomplished for the benefit of all people in India. Some key topics dealing with the doctrine and teaching of Christianity have been included to offer an understanding of the religious positions held by Catholic Christianity. The perspective kept in mind throughout the encyclopaedia is that of the Catholic Church.
This is not a work meant for the specialist in theology nor is it visualized as a reference work for the student of theology. It is meant for any person who is looking for an account of Christianity that would furnish him/her with factual information concerning its historical development, practices and living communities. An index is provided at the end of the encyclopaedia which will facilitate finding the information that the reader is looking for. Controversies and purely speculative subject matter do not feature in the contents. We are aware that many improvements can be made in the present publication and we look forward to our readers’ suggestions and comments for a future edition that fulfils the aims and purposes of this project more pointedly and comprehensively.
