The 2093 manuscripts treated in this catalogue have been grouped together under four heads: 1) Technical Literature -Linguistics, Medicine, Astronomy, Rhetorics, Astrology, Architecture, etc. 2) Hindu Literature-Veda, Dharmashastra, Purana, Philosophy, Kavya, etc. 3) Jain Literature-Agama, Philosophy, Legends, Stotras, etc. 4) Vernacular Literature – Gujarati, Hindi and Marathi. Some of these have been collected by Prof. Velankar (1893-1967) during his visits to remote villages in Maharashtra; some by Dr. Bhau Daji (1824-1874) and some by Pandit Bhagvanlal Indraji (1839-1888) – from Nepal, Tibet, Ujjain, Mathura, Kashi, etc. The catalogue contains the description of manuscripts, the summaries of contents and a list of authorities quoted by the authors. This catalogue has been reprinted as it was, with an introduction by Dr. V. M. Kulkami and Dr. Devangana Desai. It also contains eighteenbeautiful colour photographs from some manuscripts. One hard bound, durable volume, instead of the three former volumes, is another plus point of this new edition. This resurrection of the valuable but out-of print catalogue, is of tremendous scholarly importance. This rich source is certainly encouraging and inspiring for young enthusiastic scholars. However, a scholar would not know which of these manuscripts has already been edited and published during the intervening period between the first and second editions of this catalogue. If such information had been made available, as done by Prof. Velankar in Additions and Corrections (pp.xiv and 491-492), this edition would have been of still greater use to emerging scholars. However, the painstaking efforts of the two scholars in scanning the brittle pages of the catalogue and bringing it to light is certainly commendable.
