The book presents feminist approaches and examines themes like male domination, search for self-identity and freedom among women, sexual seduction and molestation, social suppression of marginalised women, gender-based discrimination, inter-racial and extra-racial conflicts, and language-related problems. Concerned with feminist ideas and themes, the volume takes up problems of women in contemporary times. It deals with empowerment of women, viewing treatment of this theme in literature—writings of Shashi Despande, Shobhaa De, Chitra Banerjee, Nayantara Sahgal, Manju Kapur and others. Critiquing their works and analysing their various aspects and providing excerpts from their writings, it explores existential tendencies in Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things and Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss, female sensibility in Anita Desai’s Fire on the Mountain and other themes.
