"After independence, India has made significant progress in the employment of women and several policy decisions have been taken to strengthen the status of women. Though governmental efforts are praiseworthy the impact accrued to women in general are not very good. Employment opportunities for men and women are not equal. The present study carried out in sixteen ministries is based on primary data collected from the women employees in various categories working for the ministries. It is a study to assess the employment situation of women prevailing in different ministries of the Government of India as well as to derive a picture about the aspirations, satisfaction and motivation with regard to employment situation."

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Shanta Kohli Chandra

Dr. (Mrs) Shanta Kohli Chandra is on the faculty of the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi, she did her M.A. (Psychology) from Delhi University. She got Master’s Diploma in Public Administration from IIPA and a Post Graduate Diploma in social Policy and Administration from University of Wales, U.K. She obtained her doctorate in Public Administration from the University of Lucknow. She has several articles to her credit and has presented papers at national and international conference. Her published books are-Family Planning Programme in India and Developments of Women Entrepreneurship in India (Mittal Publications). She has edited jointly with T. N. Chaturvedi, Social Administration; Development and Change. She was consultant to Word Health Organisation for the first International-regional dialogue on Health for All-Leadership Resource and support Network Development.
