Fish and Wildlife Ecology, together with its kindred disciplines, have of late gained unprecedented momentum — owing largely to the unchecked growth of human population and the resultant pressure on water-and-land resources. And, additionally, as a response to the global concern over pollution, deforestation, and the near extinction of wildlife. In two sections: (1) Fish and Limnology, and (2) Wildlife, this volume represents some of the latest researches in these areas of worldwide scientific interest.

Section 1, comprising 21 research articles, considers fish structure, fish food organisms, rotifers zooplankton, aquatic insects, feeding habits, reproduction, development and some other themes relevant to fish ecology and biology. In the following eight articles, assembled in Section 2, are examined varied aspects of wildlife, including notably its habitats, behaviour, threatened extinction, shrinkage of its wetlands, and its management. The contributors are experts in their chosen fields.

Essentially in the nature of a festschrift, the volume is dedicated to Professor Y R Malhotra: a distinguished, extensively-published scientist, currently Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu, (India). A specialist in ichthyology, Professor Malhotra”s research concerns have, over the years, extended into systematics (entomology), limnology, reproductive biology, endocrinology, wildlife and ecology.

The volume editor, Dr Kaul, currently heading the Department of Zoology, Government College for Women, Jammu, has worked on a number of UGC-sponsored projects on fish-and-wildlife ecology. And is also the recipient of the World Food Day award, instituted by FAO and Indian Association for Advancement of Science, New Delhi.
