Agriculture continues to sustain millions of people in India. This is despite the rapid industrialization which is acquiring significant proportions in many regions of the country. The twin processes of industrialization and urbanization are transforming the traditional economic relations between the rural and the urban segments of population. Dr. Balkrishna Vaidya has done a good job in selecting Wardha, a backward district of Maharashtra already chosen by the Planning Commission under the integrated rural development programme. In doing so he has drawn our attention to the fact that systematic land use studies have not lost their value. In fact, they should be further expanded so as to incorporate within their matrix the on-going social dynamics of the village society, particularly the processes leading to the deprivation of the vulnerable sections, such as the dalits, and the tribes who are waging a struggle for survival. Land use studies can not ignore the imperative of social development.
