One of the most distinct voices in contemporary Indian literature, Amrita Pritam got the highest literary prize Bharatiya Jnanpeeth Award in 1981. She was the first women to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award for her poetry in 1955. Her most talked-about work, however, is her autobiography Raseedi Ticket (The revenue Stamp). In the realm of fiction, she made a mark with the publication of her classic Partition novel Pinjar (The Skeleton). There are numerous novels on Partition, but there is nothing like Pinjar – a triumph of love over hatred, a celebration of communal harmony. A writer with her sensitivity truly captures the pains and trauma of Partition. In 2003, Pinjar was made into a critically acclaimed movie by the same name. In all, Amrita Pritam has published over 80 books: novels, poems and short stories. Amrita Pritam passed away in October 2005, at the age of eighty-six. The entire gamut of her writings deals with women’s role and position in Indian society. The present volume is literary tribute to the versatile genius whose writings truly reflect her life and vision.
