ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jalad Balan Ganguly

Professor Jalad Balan Ganguly, who obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Calcutta University, worked in several institutions of higher education in Tripura and also in Jawaharlal Nehru College, Pasighat, NEFA (now Arunachal Pradesh). He retired as Vice-Chancellor of Tripura University in 1993. During his service career he was actively involved in research studies on different themes concering North East India. His publication include three books as also scholarly papers. He has edited two anthologies of papers in North East India and is still deeply involved in economic studies relating to North East India. In 1994 Ganguly delivered Professor H.K. Barpujari Endowment Lectures on Structural Changes in Assam’s Economy in Dilbrugarh University. The present work is the outcome of his six years of work under the auspices of Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and development, Guwahati.
