The present volume is a pioneering move in the direction of a co-operative effort to understand the archaeology of an important historical region. It provides a most helpful ‘state of the arts’ report in respect to various archaeological phases as well as micro-level studies focusing on individual archaeological sites. Moreover it relates archaeology with historical problems, such as trade, trade routes, maritime cultural heritage and patronage in early historic Orissa. The book "Archaeology of Orissa" will therefore be most welcomed by the scholarly world. It has to be taken as an encouraging beginning, hopefully to be followed by similar efforts to cover more areas as well as new dimensions in Orissa archaeology.
