This book is a pioneering effort to portray the most important mythological spots supported by photographs, so that the readers of this book can just have a glimpse of Balpakram (the land of the spirits) and travel to these areas in spirits and dreams. In this study an attempt has made to convey correct interpretation of its legends, customs, practices, traditions and historical legendary spots that are located in and around Balpakram areas as depicted in A.chik ‘Katta Aganna’. It will be of great interest to all those who are interested in knowing all about the mythological spots in and around Balpakram areas and traditional beliefs and practices of the Garos thereto.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Julius Marak
Julius Lonesh Rangsa Marak, son of Late Gajiram R. Sangma and Mrs. Ratche R. Marak was born on July 18, 1952 at village A'beram (Agreng), West Khasi Hills, Meghalaya. He was educated at Sacred Heart Boys' High School, from where he passed his matriculation examination in 1969 and St. Anthony's College, Shillong, where he received his B.A. (Honours) in Political Science in 1973. He passed his M.A. in Political Science from the University of Guwahati in 1970. In 1982 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, by the University of Guwahati for his thesis 'The Garo Customary Laws and Practices (Sociological Study)'. He has ten books in Garo and two in English as his credit besides a number of unpublished manuscripts. He has also contributed a number of articles to the various types of magazines and journals. He is H life member of Indian Art History Congress and the Northeast India History Association. He is also a recipient of State Award conferred by the State Government of Meghalaya of 'U Tirot Singh' on 21st January, 1998 on the occasion of 25th year of Meghalaya Statehood for his contributions in the field of Literature, Art and Culture and from many other social organisations. At present, he is serving as Museologist or Curator at State Museum, Meghalaya, Shillong (1999).
