Bangladesh Economic Review is an annual publication of the Finance Division, published as one of the background documents of the national budget. The document highlights the status of socio-economic prosperity of the country by presenting and reviewing data/information on macroeconomic progress. In the English version of the review, the data/statistics have been mostly updated up to June 2005. These have been duly reflected in relevant parts of the text. The review presents fifteen chapters and sixty-three statistical appendices. Chapters one contains a brief review of the macroeconomic trends of the country. Chapters two to six incorporate an assessment of the country’s macroeconomic fundamentals like GDP, savings and investments, prices, wages and employment, fiscal and monetary sector developments. In the sector-specific chapters, developments in major sectors of the economy like agriculture, industry, power and energy, transport and communication and human resource development have been reviewed. Chapter thirteen and fourteen, focusing on the thrust sector of the economy present a brief account of the initiatives of the government towards poverty reduction and private sector development respectively. Chapter fifteen briefly reviews government actions to maintain environmental balance by containing environmental pollution.
