Guru Gobind Singh was the ideal of all the Indians who loved freedom. He always stood for the whole humanity and worked for the upliftment of the downtrodden people irrespective of their religion sect, race or caste. He stood for secularism and never performed a single act which was parochial in character. He used the words ’Hindustan’ and ‘Hindustanis’ in his writings and not ‘Punjab’ and ‘Punjabis". He fought battles risking his life, sacrificing his father, his sons and, in fact, everything for the nation’s honour. He stood for national unity and emotional integration of the Indian people. The democratic institutions created by the Guru, showed new paths to the human race having faith in the democratic ideals. The Guru created the Khalsa, transferring sovereignty to the poor and needy of our country. In the book the author has narrated the significance and objects of creating the Khalsa in a simple language. It enables the reader to grasp the circumstances in which the Guru created the Khalsa, and object he attempted was great and laudable. The book also gives a vivid picture as to why the Guru had to resort to arms. Though he did not live to see his ends accomplished, he roused the dormant energies of the vanquished people, and filled them with a lofty though fitful longing for social freedom and national ascendancy, the proper adjuncts of that purity of worship which had been preached by Guru Nanak. Interestingly every incident in Guru’s life is compressed in just 42 years, a duration not sufficient for the best of world heroes. Today the Guru lives in each of his Khalsa who number almost 25 million all over the world, as an immortal inspiration. The Guru’s teachings are more relevant today than at any other time in the modern history as he fought throughout his life for human freedom and not for any personal gains. The book fulfils a long-felt need of students of history and common man alike.
