The present volume Buddhism, Buddhists and Buddhist Studies contains selected papers invited for the International Conference on "The State of Buddhism, Buddhists and Buddhist Studies in India and Abroad" held on January 02-04, 2009 at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi on the occasion of the birth centenary of Bhikkhu Jagdish Kashyap, the pioneer scholar in the field of Pali and Buddhist Studies, and the founder teacher of Pali in Banaras Hindu University.

This volume focuses on three broad themes of the conference- Buddhism, Buddhists and Buddhist Studies. It deals with the historical survey of Buddhism, Buddhist Renascent Movements and the role of Buddhists and Buddhist Scholars in the revival of Buddhism in India during the last hundred years. It presents the state of Buddhists in different regions of the world and their struggle to preserve religious adn cultural identities, modern challenges, relevance for contemporary society. It also highlights the scholarly development in the field of Buddhist Studies and its multiple dimensions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Hari Shankar Shukla

Hari Shankar Shukla, born in 1950 at Balua, Bhojpur (Ara), Bihar in a traditioanl learned family, is presently Professor of Pali in the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He finished his higher education in Patna and Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda, Bihar. He has been with the department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, since 1979. He has published several articles in the field of Pali and Buddhist Studies. Prof. Shukla visited U.S.A., Thailand, and Cambodia t to attend the conference and deliver the lecture.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lalji Shravak

Lalji 'Shravak', born in 1960 in district Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, India, is presently Professor of Pali in the Deparment of Pali and Buddhist Studies at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He finished his higher education at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. After obtaining his Ph.D., he received Sino-Indian Cultural Exchange Fellowship of the Government of India for two years to study Chinese at Beijing, China. Specialization of Prof. Lalji is in Abhidharma Studies (With special reference to Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese Buddhist Texts). Focusing on Abhidhrama texts, he has been engaged in extensively extinct buddhist texts from Chinese into Hindi. He is the Executive Editor of the Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies.
