This book surveys in twelve chapters the March of Buddhism in India during the first 50 years of Independence (1947-1997). Buddhism in India has made tremendous progress during the period under review (1947-1997). As against less than two lakh Buddhist population in 1947, India now (1997) has nearly seventy lakh Buddhists. And to cater to the spiritual and religious needs of the ever-increasing Buddhist population, a large number of Buddha Viharas have come up in various parts of the country, the number of Bhikkhus has increased, and a good number of Buddhist societies and institutions are engaged in the preaching and preservation of the Dhamma. Hence, the future of Buddhism seems bright.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR D C Ahir

D.C. Ahir (born 1928, Punjab) is a reputed scholar of Buddhist studies, and has made notable contribution to the history of Buddhism during the last 42 years. He retired as Director to the Government of India in February 1986, and since then is fully engaged in enriching literature. He already has more than forty published works to his credit, besides numerous articles on Buddhism. In appreciation of his noble and notable contribution to the Buddhist Literature as a Distinguished Scholarand Author, the Maha Bodhi Society of India, Sarnath conferred on him on 30 November 2001 the Honorary Title of Buddha Sahitya Shiromani.
