The book presents a comprehensive study of Buddhist Sculptural art of Pagan in Myanmar considering Buddhist iconography and pictorial representations of events from Buddha’s life and Jatakas. The book discusses briefly about the development of Buddhist sculptural art in Myanmar from the times of its inception and gives a broader description of Buddhist iconography and life scenes from life of Buddha at Pagan. The Buddhist monuments of Pagan primarily constructed between eleventh to fourteenth centuries AD gives us a good glimpse of conjuncture of various artistic styles reflected in Buddhist sculptural art of Pagan. The book discusses various artistic elements flourished in this central part of Myanmar and give special emphasis to the indigenous artistic style of representing Jatakas on both glazed and unglazed terracotta plaques. Presenting an initial iconographic analysis of Buddhas of present kalpa, the author proceeds to reconstruct the overall vision of the stone sculptures and terracotta plaques in the interiors and exteriors of Buddhist monuments like Pagoda, Gu, Taik and monastic settlements at Pagan.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Elizabeth Howard Moore
Dr Elizabeth Howard Moore has commenced a three-month Visiting Senior Research Fellowship in the Open Category with effect from 27 July 2009.Dr Moore obtained her PhD in Archaeology from the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. Her first degree, BA in Art History, was obtained from Pomona College, Claremont, California. She is currently a Reader in the Department of Art & Archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London. She teaches courses on Southeast Asian Art and Archaeology and introductory lectures on remote sensing and the relationship of manmade change and the landscape.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vinay Kumar Rao
Vinay Kumar Rao received his school education from Kendriya Vidyalaya. He has Graduated and Post Graduated from Allahabad University. He has also been endowed with Master of Education from Kurukshetra University. His thesis titled Women in Early Buddhist Art was awarded for Ph. D. in year 2003-04 from VBS Purvanchal University, Jaunpur and also published from Swati Publications, Delhi. He has presented various papers in International conferences on topics related to Buddhist Sculptural art in India and abroad. He has good number of publications in field of Archaeology especially in Buddhist Art of India and Myanmar.
Vinay Kumar Rao is currently an Assistant Professor since 2004 in the Department of History, Assam University.
