Catalogue of the Coins of Ancient India by John Allan is the most important work on Indian numismatics and will long remain the main source of information for those working on the subject. It includes the well-known punch-marked, early silver and uninscribed cast copper and tribal coins ascribable to the period of Indian history between fifth century BC about AD 300. These coins, which are found from almost all parts of India, have been arranged in the Catalogue in five parts on the basis of each class and area. The catalogue proper is preceded by a detailed Introduction in which, besides giving a careful description of finds in a most lucid manner, the author has also discussed various aspects of early Indian coinage like the symbols, metrology, provenance, date, etc. Besides, detailed indexes of the attributions, rulers, inscriptions symbols on punch-marked silver and copper, uninscribed cast and tribal coins, types on tribal coins apart from a general index and conversion tables have been given adding to the utility of the volume. This useful compendium on early Indian coins also contains forty-six plates illustrating the coins included in the catalogue and is an indispensable reference work.
