Question of regional identity in the recorganization of Mdhya Pradesh is hereby presented, by introducing conceptual frame of the proposed Chhattisgarh State, reviewing antipodal elements in the region who form one third of the population, touching upon premises and purposes of tribal guerrilla movements, reflecting problems presently encountered in the process of split of a region, and concluding with an overview of political scenario. The interface of reorganization of Madhya Pradesh and accepting cultural identity in Chhattisgarhi context has two interrelated dimensions’ the pan-Indian, civilizational, on the one hand, and regional-cultural, on the other. At both the macro and micro levels, the development process needs to be informed and guided by the pluralistic and composite ethos of Chhattisgarh.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR H L Shukla

H.L. Shukla (b. 1939) has created, and for forty years he has dominated the field of Indology and modern linguistics. By any criterion Shukla’s achievement is vast: he has published about seventy books and hundreds of articles. His mastery of a huge literature is awe-inspiring: in current affairs, in linguistics, history, archaeology: anthropology, sociology, psychology, folklorology. He doesn’t believe in heroes, but it is not surprising that for many he has become one. And there can be little disagreement that he has fulfilled his expressed hope that “I’ve done something decent with my life”. Dr. Shukla served as Professor and Head Department of Languages and Culture at Barkatullah University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Currently he is engaged in Cultural Thesaurus of India.
