Human trafficking is one of the world’s most lucrative businesses after smuggling of arms and drugs; portrays the degree of danger involved in the issue. Everyday children are trafficked across the country for labour, domestic labour, commercial sex work, servitude, entertainment, sports, pornography sex tourism, child marriage, illegal activities like begging, drug peddling and for organ trade. This trafficking phenomenon happens throughout South Asia with India being the source, transit and destination points. The work focuses the nature and extent of trafficking in terms of child labour. Trafficking is an unconscious phenomena as the consequences of it is not fully known to either the victims or the parents or the community as a whole. Though for the time being it could fetch a meager income but it has its repercussions on the individual, family, society and the nation at large. India is the source, destination and transit point for trafficking which make the trafficking network more stronger and it is not that much easy to tackle the problem. A movement need to be organized so as to basically intervene the conscious mind of the people involved. Lot of instruments, laws, regulations, agencies, treaties, declarations, recommendations, schemes budgets and projects, infrastructures etc.,–marched towards the issue, yet, the problem is not seems to be curtailed rather it gains momentum and velocity as reported in mass media. A concentrated and integrated approach in a sustainable way is crucial and need of the hour involving various players including the local community where these victims hail from could be an opt solution. Hope this material better our understanding on the issue, its causes, consequences intervention strategies to various stakeholders such as Government, NGO, Policymakers, planners, local administrators, researchers and academicians.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR A. Thomas William

Dr. Thomas William, Ph.D., is a Senior Scale Lecturer in Arul Anandar College (Autonomous), Karumathur, Madurai. He had also taught and researched earlier in the Research Dept. of Social work of Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Tirupattur, North Arcot district. He earned his graduation in social Work from Loyola College (Autonomous), Chennai and Doctoral studies in Bharatpur University, Coimbatore. Dr. Williams specializes in women studies, Deviance, welfare Administration, Human Rights and NGOs and Management. He has participated and presented papers in National and International conferences and published articles.
