The collection of scholarly papers examines the origin, growth and development of Christianity in India and its role in nation-building and national integration in the pre-independence era as well as in present times. The papers comment on the presence and impact of Christianity among the different sections of the population. Referring to the role of Christians in specific areas like South Kanara, Bankura, Bengal and parts of the north-east, they discuss the work of Christian educational institutions and missionaries such as the Wesleyan Methodist Missionaries. They deal with how Christian movements, institutions and thought in general have contributed to political, economic and cultural integration, women’s empowerment, health care, character building and other areas.
