The present publication attempts to address issues related to policies with respect to climate change, biodiversity and food security including energy and sustainability issues. It contains 36 peer reviewed and selected papers presented at the International Conference on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Food Security in South Asian Region’ organized by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology in partnership with Union Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (UNESO) held on 3rd and 4th November 2008 at Chandigarh. The participants included research scientist, academicians, policymakers, programme implementers, representatives from government departments, multilateral funding agencies, voluntary organizations, media etc. from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Germany, France and Pakistan besides participants from UNESCO, IUCN and SACEP. Major national level institutions included ISRO, BARC, PHD Chamber, NBA, ZSI, BSI, FRI, SACON, NBPGR, CEE, IARI, TERI, etc. and Central & State Government Ministries and Departments. The diversity in participation is adequately reflected in the papers included in this publication.

The papers not only include policy reviews but also discuss technology oriented to location specific case studies. Thus, and attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive coverage to all the major issues pertaining to Climate Change, Biodiversity and Food Security. The publication, is therefore, expected to be of relevance to all the stakeholders and to spur action at both, government and people level, by providing and information base for improved decision making.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Gurharminder Singh

Gurharminder Singh is Scientist in the Environment Division of Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, Chandigarh. He has a work experience of more than 5 years in the area of environmental & agricultural issues, biodiversity conservation & management and IPRs issues in Punjab. He has authored/edited 5 books, 3 scientific papers, 4 reports, 16 review articles, I educational kit including a film on biodiversity.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Neelima Jerath

Neelima Jerath is Executive Director, Punjab State Council for Science & Technology and Member Secretary of Punjab Biodiversity Board. She has a work experience of more than 30 years in the area of environment and more than 10 years in the area of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). She has edited/authored 24 books, 2 education kits and more than 50 research publications. She is trained at International Centre for Conservation Education, UK on ‘Environment Education’, Smithsonian Institution, USA on ‘Environment Leadership’ and Asia Productivity Organisation, Japan on ‘Green Financing’. She was awarded with ‘Punjab State Government Award’ for work in environment from Chief Minister, Punjab in the year 1999.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ram Boojh

Ram Boojh is Programme Specialist, Ecological & Earth Sciences, UNESCO Office, New Delhi. He has a work experience of more than 27 years in the area of environment & biodiversity related issues. Present major responsibilities include the coordination of the MAB (Man and the Biosphere) programme, South and Central Asian MAB Network, Focal point for the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), Coordinator World Heritage Biodiversity Programme and responsible for UNESCO’s natural heritage programme. He is recipient of the Science Academy Medal for Young Scientist of the Indian National Science Academy presented by late Mrs. Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of Indian in January 1984. He has published over 50 research/technical papers in various journals of repute, over 100 popular articles and 11 books.
