A diverse range of natural fibers are produced in many countries providing an important source of income for farmers and can play an important role in improving food security, eradicating poverty, the United Nations Assembly, 20 December 2006, decided to proclaim 2009 as the year of natural fibers. The book describes about some of the fiber yielding plants of N.W. Himalayas with special reference to Uttarakhand, many of the natural fibers described have been traditionally used by the rural communities, some of the traditional processing techniques employed have been described along with other natural fiber plant species that have the potential to provide alternative employment opportunities.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Anuj Kumar

Anuj Kumar is a passionate bioinformaticist with extensive interests on plant and human genomics. He is currently working as In-charge of Advanced Centre for Computational and Applied Biotechnology, Uttarakhand Council for Biotechnology, Govt. of Uttarakhand. He completed his M.Sc. in Bioinformatics from Ch. Charan Singh University, Meerut (India). Since last few years, Anuj has been involved in drug discovery and functional annotation of cereals genomes especially unannotated wheat genome. He has authored more than 20 research papers/articles in the research journals.
