Containerization is a system of intermodal cargo transport using standard ISO containers that can be loaded on container ships, railroad cars and trucks. It has revolutionized cargo shipping. Today, nearly 90% of non-bulk cargo moves by containers put on transport ships. Containerization is an important cargo-moving technique developed in the 20th century. It has formed an integral part of logistics the world over, India is no exception too. The idea of containerization and its reaping benefits in handling freight transport in both developing and developed economies will help open ways for global trade practices. The major objectives, the successful cases of container ports, products and models of containers, infrastructure, capacity challenges, economic aspects, increased customer value through containerization and the private sector involvement in handling containers will form the outline of the book. The Indian Railway Minister, Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav has taken the initiative for Private-Public Partnership between the Indian Railways and 14 private container train operators to look up various issues because containerization is treated as a sunrise industry. This is aimed at not only increasing the rail share of container traffic but also introducing competition in the intermodal rail freight market leading to service improvements. It also contains enabling provisions to meet the future requirements in terms of infrastructure and technological developments. This book will help the emerging economies in reducing time and costs in freight transport either through rail, road, container ships or planes. It will also help increase the volume of international trade possible and more happening through complex supply chains in India.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Padmanabhan Nair

P Nair is a Senior Consultant and member of the New Initiatives Group in the Icfai University. He has over 20 years of hands on experience in Banking, Financial Services, Business and Infrastructure Consultancy and Financing. During this period, he has worked with organizations like State Bank of India, 20th Century Finance Corporation, Industrial Investment Trust and GIIC (Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation). He has worked on various policy initiatives regarding infrastructure and has participated in the creation of diverse institutional structures, both on the project financing and policy development fronts. He is the Consulting Editor of The Icfai Journal of Infrastructure and also contributes articles to a range of publications in the fields of Finance, Banking and Risk Management and Public Policy. A graduate of Delhi University and a PGDM from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, he has majored in finance and marketing. He has also been active in various fora and management associations like IIM Alumnus, Ahmedabad Management Association, Hyderabad Management Association, and Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce etc.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR V.V. Ramani

V.V. Ramani holds an M.A., Phil and a PGDM from Madras University. She is currently working as a Faculty Member and Consulting Editor with ICFAI University. She has over 18 years of industry and academic experience. She is the Joint Secretary of National Human Resources Development Network, Hyderabad Chapter and Vice President of CEASE Child Labor (an ILO Project). Her articles have been published in various magazines and management journals. She presented several papers in various conferences and seminars. Her areas of interest include Economics disciplines like Micro-Economics, Macro-Economics, International Trade, Public Finance and HR disciplines like Leadership, Organisational Development, Human Resource Management and Networking.
