Contemporary Social Realities in Indian English Fiction of Post 1980’s

This compendium of 20 papers, presented at a national conference, organized by Manav Rachna International University, Faridabad, attempts to interpret the writings of some of the contemporary Indian fiction writers by focusing on their responses to questions pertaining to contemporary social realities of India. It deals with the issues concerning feminism, cultural pluralism, human relationships, identity crisis, psychology of children, mother-daughter relationship, dilemma of cultural exile, rootlessness, dislocation, and the crisis of ‘self”.

The novelists studied in this book include Arvind Adiga, Manju Kapur, Bama, Kunal Basu, Shashi Deshpande, Amitav Ghosh, Upamanyu Chatterjee, Ruskin Bond, Namita Gokhale, Jhumpa Lahiri, Bharati Mukherjee, Arundhati Roy, and Salman Rushdie.
