Set predominantly in rural Karnataka,, Crossing Over is a gripping and passionate novel which centers on Satyabhama, the quiet and independent daughter of a Brahmin priest. When she announces her intention of marrying a man of lower caste Srinivasa, it precipitates a course of events which stresses the nature and extent of social and intercaste conflict in India. The novel also highlights the hypocrisy of the system and the often violent struggle for equality and is not only a strong indictment of the oppression, misery and injustice caused by caste distinctions but is also an uplifting account of a steadfast and courageous woman’s voyage of self-discovery.
