This is the second part of history of the Democratic Socialist Movement in India, being written by the present writer. The first part of the history, covering early years of the movement led by the Congress Socialist Party from 1934 to 1947, has already been published under the title, A History of the Congress Socialist party, in 1995. The second Party is devoted to the history of Socialist Party, 1947-52. The third part is intended to cover history of praja socialist party and its off-shoot parties from 1952 to 1977. The year 1977 has been taken as a line of demarcation in the history because in 1977 the Socialists decided to merge with other non-Communist parties to form the Janata Party with a view to dislodging the ruling Congress from power. After disintegration of the Janata Party in 1979, the Socialists have been a scattered lot. The fourth and the final part of the study is proposed to present a history of the Samajvadi Party which was formed in 1992. The need for writing an authentic history of post-independence era of the country is being felt widely. The history of Socialist Party for the period, from 1947 to 1952, is study of an important aspect of history of the country of this era. There is no well researched, systematic and full-length published work on history of Democratic Socialist Movement led by the Socialist Party in the post-independence India. The present study is intended to fill in this lacuna.
