Development Induced Displacement and Rehabilitation

Development induced displacement is an issue that currently is high on development agenda. The development is undertaken to generate and percolate benefits to the society at large: however, the process has led the resettlement of millions of people. The involuntary population displacement may lead to irreversible socio-cultural impoverishment. India has largest number of displacement due to development projects particularly infrastructure projects including dams, power, industries, roads etc. Narmada Sagar Project in Western India has been one of the most controversial development projects, which has caused a large number of displacements. Similarly, mining, power projects, industries, and other infrastructure projects have displaced a large number of people in Orissa and Madhya Pradesh. The book is an attempt to review the development induced displacement in India and assess the impact of development projects on displacement and rehabilitation in Madhya Pradesh and Orissa where a large number of displaced persons are resettled.
