Education has deep roots in India. This country had its own education system even during ancient times. Later, in Medieval period the education system was further polished and perfected. Most of the rulers during sultanate period took keen interest in promotion of education. Later, in Mughal era, the emperors and their administration devoted great attention to the promotion and growth of education in this country. They established a network of schools and institutions of higher learning, throughout the vast empire. However, the real development of education began under British regime only. The new rulers framed policies and laid foundation of modern education in India. They opened schools and colleges, all over British India. No doubt, the English masters shaped the education system, in accordance with their interests and their primary aim was to produce administrators and clerks for the strength and durability of their government. But, in fact that proved to a blessing in disguise. Over the years, the English established and cultivated a perfect education system on modern western lines.
