The fiftieth year of independence has prompted a review of the various development programmes launched by the government for planned socio-economic upliftment of the weaker sections in India. Comprising sixteen original essays by well-known scholars and activists working in different fields, the book is divided into three parts. While the first two parts analyse the economic, educational and cultural development of weaker sections in India respectively, the last part deals with their social oppression. The volume covers an entire gamut of issues like caste and gender oppression, cultural imperialism, child labour, human rights of the prisoners, and neglect and apathy towards weaker sections. The book is timely and of much academic and practical interest.
