The basic objective of this book is to provide an elaborate picture of Development policies and programs that have been taken for poverty alleviation in Bangladesh. The present work critically examines all five year plans with particular focus on poverty alleviation programs. An attempt has been made in this work to evaluate regional disparity in development and incidence of poverty. Some of the specific issues of poverty have been discussed and important strategies for poverty alleviation have been suggested in this book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Md. Motiur Rahman

Pk. Md. Motiur Rahman is Professor at the Institute of Research and Training (ISRT), University of Dhaka. He received B.Sc. Honours and M.Sc. in statistics from the University of Rajshahi and he was awarded M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Dhaka. Subsequently, he conducted a post-doctoral research at the Institute of Developing Economies (IDE), Tokyo, Japan. He has authored Poverty Issues in Rural Bangladesh and contributed to Experiences with Economic Reform. A Review of Bangladesh’s Development edited by Professor Rehman Sobhan and published by UPL. The author has been actively engaged in research on poverty, inequality and ‘rural development and has published papers in applied Economics (Chapman and Hall, U.K.), Modern Asian Studies (Cambridge University Press, U.K.), Indian Journal of Economics, Indian Journal of Agricultural Economics, Asian Economic review and many other journals. He is member of several national and international professional societies.
