It is well known that Buddhism brings an international dimension to Indian culture. N.H. Samtani, an Indian scholar of international fame, truly represents this international aspects. He has represented India all over the Buddhist scholarly world. His work will be consulted for a long time to come. The subjects of the contributions show a connection with the sphere of interest of N.H. Samtani, namely textual studies, but also socio-philosophical studies.
Because the response was overwhelming, the editors had to select a limited number of contributions. Thirteen of the twenty-four contributions are written by scholars from abroad. Every student of Buddhism and of religion in general is sure to find useful information in the many pages of this volume.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Charles Willemen
Charles Willemen, M.A. in Classics (Latin and Greek), M.A. and Ph.D. in Oriental Studies, all in Belgium, where he has been a full professor since 1977. he is lifelong member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Sciences, and has been visiting professor in Nalanda. Benares, Santineketan, Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Calgary. He has written extensively about the spread of Buddhism from India to East Asia, both in books and in such periodicals as the Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies, etc.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Lalji Shravak
Lalji 'Shravak', born in 1960 in district Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, India, is presently Professor of Pali in the Deparment of Pali and Buddhist Studies at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He finished his higher education at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. After obtaining his Ph.D., he received Sino-Indian Cultural Exchange Fellowship of the Government of India for two years to study Chinese at Beijing, China.
Specialization of Prof. Lalji is in Abhidharma Studies (With special reference to Pali, Sanskrit and Chinese Buddhist Texts). Focusing on Abhidhrama texts, he has been engaged in extensively extinct buddhist texts from Chinese into Hindi. He is the Executive Editor of the Indian International Journal of Buddhist Studies.
