The book is concerned with the impact of modernity and post-modernity on perspectives on religion, politics and ethics with specific reference to concepts as those of secularism, pluralism civil society, self-identity and humanism. The focus is on the thoughts of Charles Taylor especially the modern-secular frame of Taylor and re-reading Gandhi through this frame. It explores the concept of self according to Taylor, the notion of modern self-identity, secular modernity and the relation of modern identity with holistic identity. The Gandhian ideas on unity in diversity, the human self and integration of holistic identity and harmony of life are analysed. It examines the convergences and divergences between the two thinkers.
