Mega dams often evoke lots of reactions; the proposed Tipaimukh DAM (TD) is no exception. To be developed on Barak river near the border of the neighbouring states of Manipur and Mizoram in north east India, TD is one of the biggest and most ambitious dams ever planned in the country. Much has been said and written for and against the proposed dam and it has been hotly debated not only within India, but also outside. In the said context, the present volume is unique. It comprises a score of analytical and review papers contributed by local intellectuals and activists from Tipaimukh areas. The included papers highlight both positive and negative aspects of the dam, covering vital and crucial areas such as economic benefits to the local people, protection of indigenous land rights, hopes and fears of the local tribal population, displacement and rehabilitation, and popular myths & realities.
