As a result of the emergence of the modern sciences like biotechnology, bioinformatics, etc. which are as rapidly advancing fields of study, the life sciences have acquired increasing importance and relevance. The main dictionary covers all branches of botany like morphology, taxonomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, economic botany, evolution etc. The supplement is mainly meant for advanced level students and teachers and all those interested in plants in a general way. It lays emphasis on the interrelationships of botany with allied subjects and latest developments like biotechnology, genomics, environmental sciences, plant diversity, conservation, etc.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR R.L.N. Shastri

Dr. R.L.N. Shastri, (Born on 2-12-1928 at Masreas) took his D.Sc. Degree from the Andhra University Visakhapatnam in 1958, in Botany and was on the faculty of the Andhra University for 17 years. During that period, he had wide ranging experience of teaching graduate branches of Botany. From 1959-61 he was at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA on a Fullbringht Fellowship. He shifted to Telugu Akademi, Hyderabad in 1969 and retired there as Deputy Director in 1987. Telugu Akademi published several textbooks, translatioins, monographs, popular books and dictionaries written by Dr. Sastri. In additin he published nearly 1500 articles in English and Telugu on popular science in various reputed newspapers and magazines (including several radio talks) from 1949 onwards. He was awarded “Jammi Sakuntala Memorial Award” for science writing in Telugu by the Science Writers Association, in Telugu for the year 2000.
