Of the thirty-three scheduled tribes in Andhra Pradesh, thirty inhabit hilly and forest regions. There was relative stagnation for a long period and significant changes took place starting from the colonial era with the penetration of administration, and migration of non-tribal populations in to the tribal areas. The proximity with non-tribals led to the emergence of caste like features in the tribal communities. Pressure on land and forest resources caused by land alienation and forest policies resulted in serious problems to the tribals leading to misery and unrest. After independence, further changes have taken place under the impact of governmental policies and programmes. In the present book an attempt is made to present the transformation in tribal areas as viewed through various available works. The author made use of insights gained from various studies in providing a comprehensive picture of tribal transformation in Andhra Pradesh. Brought out as a survey of research and a source book, the present book traces the dynamics of tribal scenario unfolded through the works of various authors. This book will be extremely useful to social scientists, policymakers and all those interested in tribal areas.
