The importance of bamboos has increased many-folds during the last few decades as an important source of raw material for varied end-uses. Besides being important as a raw material in a number of industries, bamboos are used in a myriad industries, bamboos are used in a myriad ways by the rural people and are interwoven with their life style in many parts of our country, especially in north-eastern India including Assam. The selection of bamboos for specific need is of paramount importance for their better and efficient utilization, which in turn necessitates authentic identification of bamboo before they could be subjected to experimentation or fed to industry. Taxonomy of bamboo, which in other words means identification, is basic to all other facets of study leading to their effective utilization and management of bamboo resources. Diversity and Distribution of Bamboos is Assam is a pioneering work on bamboos of Assam in the form of a consolidated taxonomic and distributional account. Details accounts of taxonomic circumscription of bambusoid grasses, historical perspective of bamboo taxonomy, global distributional pattern and uses of bamboos have been dealt with. The work is based on seven years of fieldwork by the authors during 1994-2000. it deals with 40 species, one variety and one forma belonging to genera of bamboo found to be occurring in Assam. Taxonomic treatment includes explicit keys to genera and species in the world and in India with critical notes on distribution and nomenclature has also been provided. The vernacular name and usage recorded for the species are also form the part of the species account. The book is profusely illustrated with three maps, 42 line drawings and 47 coloured photographs. Critical discussions on distribution, usage, rare and endangered elements and strategies worked out for conservation of rare and endangered bamboos of Assam are added attraction of the book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR C. Barooah

C. Barooah, M.Sc., Ph.D. is Scientist of Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Guwahati and Scientist-in-Charge of the Assam Bio-Resource Centre, Madan Kamdev. He is engaged in ex situ and in situ conservation of rare, endangered and endemic plant species of north-eastern India. Under his guidance the Assam Bio-Resource Centre has developed into an important center for conservation and cultivation of medicinal plants, canes, bamboos and other plant resources of the region. He is also supervising a DST sponsored project – Orgnic cultivation and semi-processing of high valued medicinal plants involving rural women in Assam. Prior to his joining in ASTEC, he served in State Forest research Institute (SFRI), Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh and worked with Dr. K. Haridasan, Scientist, SFRI on Baseline survey of biovidersity in high priority biologically rich areas of Arunachal Pradesh. Dr. Barooah has a number of research papers to his credit and also attended several seminars.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S.K. Borthakur

S.K. Borthakur, Ph.D., F.B.S., F.E.S. is Professor, Department of Botany, Gauhati University and is well-known field botanist of India. He is particularly known for his ethnobotanical and floristic works in north-eastern India. He has published more than 70 research papers in India and beyond, several popular articles and two books. Worthy of special mention is his books-Illustrated Manual of Ferns of Assam. He has attended a number of national and international conferences in India and abroad. Several scholars have obtained their M.Phil and Ph.D. degree under the guidance of Dr. Borthakur. He is recipient of S.K. Jain Medal of Society of Ethnobotanists in 1998 and act as member of several national and international professional bodies and editorial board of journals.
