The book is written with the motto to bring general awareness about earthquakes and earthquake resistant features of a building among engineers, architects and general public. The book deals with the earthquake resistant design and construction of buildings. It describes design provisions of Indian standards, uniform building code (United States), National building Code of Canada and Mexico Federal District Code. It lucidly presents the technique to make a building earthquake resistant by certain improvements in masonry buildings, proper ductile detailing of R.C.C. structures and by incorporating latest techniques of base isolation. It also presents methods of repairs and seismic strengthening of a building affected by an earthquake. A report on Chamoli earthquake and a discussion on Gujrat earthquake is included to discuss various aspects of these national tragedies. The book is useful for practicing consulting engineers and architects.

Hemant Kumar Sharma has obtained his M. Tech. Degree in Civil Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1992. He is at present working as Sector Engineer in Jaipur Development Authority, Jaipur. He has worked in premier private sector companies like Tata Electric Company, and CIMMCO Birla Ltd. He is a member of International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Member of Indian Geotechnical society, Member of Indian Roads Congress and member of Indian Institute of Bridge Engineers. He has contributed several articles to technical journals and conference proceedings.
