The present work entitled Economic and Social Life in Ancient India is an attempt to depict the picture of economic and social conditions of India since Vedic Period to A.D. 1200. In this work the author has tried to put an authentic and comprehensive account in a proper perspective of society and economy of Ancient India. So that its readers can get an opportunity to have a better access to original materials and gain an insight to their different aspects, particularly those who have not received elaborate treatment in the available books. Indeed, the pictures of social and economic life of Ancient India can be traced and carved from various inscriptions, coins, artifacts and literary sources apart from archaeological data and foreign accounts. The present monograph is based upon these especially Asokan Inscription, Mandasore Pillar Inscritption, Coins Maurya, Sunga, Kusana and Gupta Periods. These Numismatic sources provides information not only about the religion faiths and beliefs through the effigies of diety depicted on them, and important archaeological trends of temples, Stupas and palaces and private dwellings, works of art like images, frescoes and most of articles used by contemporary people unearthed by the spade of the archaeologists throw fascinating glimpse into the social and economic life of Ancient India. It is also observed the ample materials in Samskrit, Pali Prakrit, and Tamil Literature of India. An earnest effort has been a made to draw a clean picture of economic and historical conditions as well as life in Ancient India. It will be author’s pleasure for indulgence of generous readers for any shortcomings as well as valuable suggestions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Kamal Shankar Srivastava
Dr. Kamal Shankar Srivastava born in Varanasi (U.P.), India, an Eminent Scholar, Young Indologist, Museologist, Journalist, Art-Historian and Academician turned Administrator Joined Bihar Administrative Service in 1984, Obtained the Post-Graduate degrees (M.A.s) in seven different disciplines: (i) Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology (ii) History (iii) Museology (iv) English Literature (v) Mass Communication (vi) Public Administration and (vii) Sociology. Awarded B.H.U. Gold Medal in 1981, in 1985, Awarded Ph.D degree in AIHC and Archaeology-Museology from BHU, Varanasi. He also obtained the Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC), and Post-Graduate Diplomas in four different disciplines i.e. Business Administration, Tourism Administration, Human Rights Law and Environmental Management. In 2002 awarded Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) degree in history followed by Degree of LL.B. Author of more than 37 books concerning different field of Indian History, Art, Religion and Culture, Iconography, Museology, Tourism, Journalism, Painting, Indology and Heritage etc. Life Fellow of numismatics society of India, Museums Association of India, Bihar Puravid Parishad, Patna, Indian Social Science Academy and Executive Member of Baudh Sanskriti Kendra, Patna, Presented several papers and articles in the field of At, indology and Museology. At present, he is in Jharkhand Administrative Service.
