This book highlights the achievements and drawbacks of the agricultural and industrial sectors of West Bengal. With over 70 percent of the population of the state in rural areas, West Bengal has successfully re-established its position on the agricultural map of India through exemplary performance in rice and vegetable production and improved rural prosperity. This book discusses the slump of some traditional industries during the ’70s and ’80s and the late but forceful entry of some sunrise industries, along with current efforts to resurrect the traditional industries. The two volumes of this series will enlighten readers on the socio-economic state of West Bengal, its key infrastructural developments, its gains achieved in the agricultural sector and its industrial rejuvenation.
