Dairying is the second important source of income and employment for a large proportion of rural masses in India and most of them are small, marginal farmers and agricultural labourers. Indian dairy farmers have done the greatest task of making India number one producer of milk in the world. The increase in per capita milk availability is a big achievement keeping in view the huge increase in the population of the country. This book examines the policies and programmes implemented through five year plans for the development of dairy sector and takes the account of the dairy development in India. Further, it presents the results of the survey study conducted to assess the impact of dairy cooperatives on the milk producers in the study area. Finally, it makes some valuable suggestions for healthy development of the dairy cooperatives in the country.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR S S Ambhore

S S Ambhore is Reader in Economics at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College, Aurangabad, Maharashtra. He has obtained Ph.D. degree in Economics from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Auranghabad. He has published articles in national and internaitonal journals. He is an active member of several academic organizations.

Dr. V.B. Bhise (b. 1955) is a senior professor in the Department of Economics of Dr. Babasahab Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad. Professor Bhise has contributed to many journals of Economics. He has earlier edited a book on "Economics Reforms and Ninth Five Year Plan." He is an active member of many professional bodies of economists.
