The era of sixteen years of economic reforms in India has given us some indication of what is possible. The growth rate of the economy in the past reforms period is higher than in the previous decades putting India among top ten fastest growing developing economies. However, the task of reforms is far from over. Our growth remains below the levels achieved by East-Asian countries. We need to grow at much faster rates if we have to raise standard of living of the mass of our people, create a sufficient growth of high quality jobs for increasingly better educated new entrants to labour force and bring about reduction in poverty. It is in this backdrop that the present book undertakes to make appraisal of various aspects of economic reforms in India in detail and in an analytical manner so that it can help in focusing the attention of policy-makers to ground realities of economic reforms in India and the problems that need to be urgently redressed.
