The book Economics of Floriculture is the outcome of a major research project sponsored by UGC, New Delhi. This book contains: Policies of central and state governments on floriculture development. The Government of India identified floriculture as sunrise industry which garner the significant share of global trade in flowers. Floriculture development experiences of leading countries in the world such as Netherlands, Columbia, Kenya etc. Supply and demand for flowers as well as export and import of floriculture products in the world. The economic viability of floriculture units in the selected cities of India specially in Pune and Bangalore, based on primary data. Suggestions for policy implications. In short it concludes that area specific, location specific and cost effective technology, market niche and commensurable infrastructure are very important ingredients for the development of floriculture in India. This book is useful not only to the students and researchers in economics and general public as well as entrepreneurs who are interested to know the viability of floriculture units.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR R.G. Desai
Dr. R.G. Desai started his career as Lecturer in Economics in 1975 and at present he is a Professor and Head, Department of Economics, Bangalore University, Bangalore. He has been actively involved in teaching, research and consultancy. He has completed five research projects sponsored by ICSSR, UGC, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India and K.K. Birla Foundation, New Delhi. He has published five books and twenty two research articles in a number of journals, presented research papers in various National and International seminars. He is a recipient of Gold Medal on Economic Research conferred by the Seminal Research Center, Hydeabad (1997). Dr. R.G. Desai, an Awardee of National Fellowship in Economics of K.K. Birla Foundation, New Delhi during 2003-04 has completed the work on “Economics of Information Technology – A Study of Leading States in India†at the Institute of Social and Economic Change Bangalore as a visiting fellow. He has represented Bangalore University in the International Conference held at New Delhi in Jan 2004, where Nobel Economist A.K. Sen had addressed the Delegates. He is a nominated member of the Regional Direct Taxes Advisory Committee Bangalore and a Life Member of Indian Society of Agricultural Economics, Indian Society of Labour Economics and Indian Economic Association.
