The book contains papers dealing with methodological and empirical issues in the analysis of human behaviour. The papers stress on the problems of conceptualization, relevant data base and the choice of appropriate estimation procedures for inferences. The book contains four main sections. The first section presents the economics of human behaviour with special reference to group behaviour. The second section contains papers on education and human behaviour. Aspects like education for development, education and income inequality, costs of education in schools and colleges, demand for education, choice of course, learning process and effects of education on risk taking behaviour are analysed in depth. The third section deals with human behaviour and the labour market. Aspects like trade union membership and its effects on earnings, compensating differences for risky jobs, earnings differentials by sector and sex and structure of the labour market are analysed more intensively using econometric techniques. The fourth section brings out the importance of the household on human behaviour. Aspects like decisions regarding marriage and migration, health investments, and entrepreneurial aspects of women are analysed. Each paper is written by an expert in that field. Most papers are from the doctoral theses of the contributors. Each author surveys the current state-of-the-art in his/her field and results are presented in a lucid manner. There is a paper on the academic career of the pioneer, Prof. A.M. Nalla Gounden, to whom the book is dedicated. All contributors are his students/colleagues/friends, with established reputations in their fields. The book is the first of its kind in India: first in the econometric explorations of human behaviour, first in the synthesis of market economic approach to non-market behaviour.
