There is a deep-rooted national awareness, a welcome keenness to evolve a viable mode and contribute to the formulation of a meaningful education policy. The education of the poor has been neglected in the rural regions of the country. Thus, there is a dire need to rethink on our thrusts and priority areas. In Education for the Poor the author concentrates on the theme through the perceptic study of specific aspects. Topics discussed here include elementary education, entrance and admission tests, girl’s education and placement, education of the tribals, conduct of examinations, private coaching, channelising the youth energy, higher education, research activity, emerging roles of principals, autonomous colleges, fake institutions and degrees, management for the poor, and education for life. The book examines the issues in details, brings them to a sharper focus and suggests that many baffling problems like unemployment, poverty, and growing population can be resolved by strengthening the education system in rural India. This is urgently required at this juncture in the history of the country if education is to be geared towards all-round progress, democratic patterns, communal harmony, mutual understanding, and preservation of human rights. The book thus views the education system from an entirely new angle. It highlights its deficiencies and makes concrete, pragmatic suggestions to remedy the situation. A very useful book for educational administrators and planners.
