This edited book contains 28 articles in Vol. 1 and 26 articles in Vol. II written by young as well as experienced researchers. The papers critically discuss the policies and programmes for employment in India including the recently introduced National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme. The papers are either on evaluation of employment programmes and policies in India or state or region specific micro-level studies. The papers deal with various aspects of employment programmes in India like identification of causes of low level of implementation and suggestion for effective implementation. One of the notable aspects of these papers is that most of the papers have suggested alternative ways of generating more employment and solving the problem of unemployment. It is hoped that the papers will stimulate further research in the area and will help the planners and administrators to undertake more pragmatic policies.
